This page contains more information regarding the types of licence classificationin in use today by the DVLA and any special licencing requirements.  Please note that: 
  • A standard car licence is all that is required to drive a 3.5 tonne vehicle.
  • *An upgraded licence is required for 7.5 tonne vehicles, if you passed your car test after January 1997
  • Only fully qualified personnel should operate crane vehicles
Please refer to the table below detailing the licence categories (as of 01/05/02) and a description of the types of vehicle they cover:

B1 Motor tricycle with maximum design speed exceeding 50 km/h and engine capacity greater than 50cc but excluding any vehicle in category K,L or P C and J
C Motor vehicle used for the carriage of goods with permissible maximum weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes including such a vehicle drawing a trailer with maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750Kg Hgv 2 or 3
C1 Motor vehicle used for the carriage of goods with maximum authorised mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes and including such a vehicle drawing a trailer with maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750kg A
D Motor Vehicle used for the carriage of passengers with more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat Psv 1,2 or 3
D1 Motor vehicle used for the carriage of passengers with more than eight seats , but not more than 16 seats, in addition to the drivers seat and including such a vehicle drawing a trailer with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750kg A
B plus E Combination of a motor vehicle in category B and a trailer with maximum with maximum authorised mass exceeding 750kg A
C plus E+ Combination of a motor vehicle in category B and a trailer with maximum authorised mass exceeding 750kg Hgv 1
C1 plus E++ Combination of a motor vehicle in sub category C1 and a trailer with maximum authorised mass exceeding 750kg where the mam of the combination does not exceed 8.25 tonnes (or 12 tonnes if a separate C1 plus E test has been passed) and the trailer mam does not exceed the towing vehicle ulw A
D plus E Combination of a motor vehicle on Category D and a trailer with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 750 kg Psv 1 or 2
D1 plus E Combination of a motor vehicle in a sub-category D1 and a trailer with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 750kg A
F Agricultural tractor, but excluding any vehicle in category H F

**  Not covered on Post 1st January 1997 licences

+   Holders of licences based on old class 2 or 3 entitlement will have C plus E entitlement limited to drawbar   trailers. This is shown as category restriction 102 on the licence ++  The trailer mam/towing vehicle ulw ratio was originally understood to apply only to combinations in the ’12 tonne’ category. However, a legal loophole arising from the implementing regulations means in the that this limit applies to C1 plus entitlement in general, regardless of the basis of entitlement
